Maternal health is a very important component to Congenital disease. Several maternal related diseases and traits have very profound effects on baby outcomes at birth. Primary tests on a woman before conceiving or after conceiving is very important given that the neural tube connecting the spinal chord to the brain begins to form in the first month of pregnancy and if these maternal factors are not addressed in time, it affects infant growth. In the United States, birth defects affects 3% of all babies. From the the Figures above wherein all maternal related congenital disease was used as background compared to specific traits (drugs intake and heart disease) and specific diseases like (viruses and bacteria), it was observed that viruses contribute a major role to this effect compared to bacteria and other related traits. In the USA, almost all maternal factors and traits had similar and related proportions as a possible cause to congenital disease. These Figures don’t specify exactly why these differences are observed but highlights the need for further analysis in evaluating possible viruses with dominant effects on maternal related congenital disease.
